At Beechboro Primary School, the English teaching and learning program is designed using the Western Australian Curriculum, balancing and integrating the three strands of Language, Literature and Literacy.
Beechboro Primary School has implemented several whole school approaches to enhance the teaching and learning of English including but not limited to Word of the Week, Dianna Rigg strategies, Guided Reading and Talk for Writing.
Students who prove to be enthusiastic readers and writers may be invited to join the Beechboro Novelists Specialist Writing group. They meet for one hour per week for an in-depth study of writing skills. They plan for their participation in National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) in which they write every day for the month of November on an extended text. Previous students have written between 1,000 to 30,000 words on their novels.
Students are also given the opportunity to attend excursions/incursions with published authors and illustrators, such as the Scribblers Festival, Write a Book in a Day, and The Literature Centre. Costs for these activities varies, however students are expected to attend as they form a basis of instruction for lessons.
